Event Description

Regardless of genre, style or level of experience, all writers work with words and sentences as the basic units of prose. This course will re-focus your writing on the level of the sentence, providing practical ways to improve your prose in both drafting and editing stages. You will learn, among other things, to write more freely and imaginatively, to strengthen your verbs, avoid cliché, think more creatively about imagery and metaphor, and edit your work, and the work of others, more effectively. The course involves a combination of tuition, examples, and writing exercises to empower you to elevate your sentences from ordinary to sublime.
Emily Bitto is an award-winning writer of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Her debut novel, The Strays, won the 2015 Stella Prize. Her second novel, Wild Abandon, was the winner of the 2022 Margaret and Colin Roderick Literary Award. Emily has taught creative writing for over a decade and is currently a course advisor at the Faber Writing Academy.

Notes & Requirements

Please select a short sample of your writing, maximum 200 words, and bring this either in hard copy or on a laptop. You will not need to share this with anyone, it is just to work on yourself. Please select a piece of writing that is fairly descriptive, i.e. not a scene that is dialogue-heavy.
