Introduction to Poetry: Writing Memory from Place

Event Description
Through guided writing exercises, participants will explore new ways of accessing creative flow and will explore poetic tools such as imagery, specificity and line breaks and how to use them to add meaning to their poetry.
During the session, participants will be invited to consider existing poetry for meaning and share their own poems for feedback and will learn techniques to edit their work.
You will learn:
- How to access the creative flow through writing exercises
- How to draw inspiration from memory, place and personal experience
- How to use imagery and sensory language to enrich a poem
- How line breaks influence meaning and introduce movement
- How to transform raw writing into a crafted poem through revision
Lucy Norton is a storyteller, living and creating on Gadigal and Wangal Country. She writes about memory, place and the connections between people, spirit and land. Her work is published in Cordite Poetry Review, Industrial Estate and Overland Literary Journal. Lucy was awarded the Malcolm Robertson Fellowship for Poetry through The Next Chapter 2026 program.
