Event Description
The workshop Writing Strong Female Characters will offer an opportunity to read, discuss, write and share examples of strong female characters. This course will focus particularly on overcoming cliches and stereotypes and provide a range of strategies for creating the kind of narrative voice that you love to read. By the end of the course, you will have started a new piece of writing and have a list of recommended readings.
Learning outcomes:
· How to create a distinctive first-person voice
· How to show rather than tell a character via subtle detail
· How to embrace the element of surprise when developing character
Amy Brown is New Zealand-Australian writer and teacher, who lives with her family in Brunswick, Victoria. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Melbourne and has published three poetry collections and four children's novels. Her debut novel for adults, My Brilliant Sister, was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript and was published by Scribner in 2024. Her next novel, Hil, is forthcoming in 2027.
